Antoinette Porter King and family papers, 1829-2002.

Correspondence, diaries, and genealogies comprising the compiled genealogical and historical record of two families who migrated from New York to Wisconsin and eventually settled near Jackson, Minnesota. The bulk of the collection is composed of correspondence, both originals and typed transcripts, between members of Antoinette Porter King's family starting prior to her birth and continuing through 1918. The letters are grouped by correspondent and each group is accompanied by an introduction written by Ruth King Freymann. The introductions contain biographical data, related background information, and a list of "dramatis personae." Freymann compiled, as an appendix to the bound volumes of transcripts, a chronological index to the entire set of correspondence. She also annotated the correspondence with information on locale, events, and individuals mentioned. Correspondents include Antoinette and William King; their son, Selah Samuel King; her parents, Selah and Cornelia Porter; her husband's parents, John and Hannah King; her brother, Lebbeus Effingham Porter; her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Barney; her aunt, Mary Dan; her uncle, Samuel Lyman Porter, and her cousin, Louise Wilson. Antoinette's diary (1866-1894), also transcribed and annotated by Ruth King Freymann, describes the family move to Jackson, Minnesota, from Whitewater, Wisconsin, in 1866 and daily life over the following years. A second diary (1918-1944), kept by Antoinette's son Willie, contains just over 30 brief entries related to family matters, the weather, gardening, and current affairs. Topics include Selah and Cornelia's courtship; the migration of the Porter and King families from New York to Wisconsin and on to Minnesota; her children; homesteading experiences; news from relatives in England and New York; accounts of the family's health, finances, and farming; William Vipen King's Civil War service; Selah S. King's experiences in Jasper, Minnesota, where he founded the local newspaper "The Jasper Journal;" the World War I experiences of William Vance and James Hilton King.
